Dezeen Awards 2024

Dezeen Awards master jury

This week the Dezeen Awards master jury came together to ratify the finalists for this year’s awards, and select the winners of the Dezeen Awards 2024. We were 18, out of the total 94 judges for this year’s prize, including Patricia Urquiola, Inga Sempé, Peter Mabeo, Lee Broom and Keiji Ashizawa. An array of excellent projects made selection somewhat intense at times, but I think the winners were well deserved.

Winners will be announced on 26 November – full details here_

Moby in Milan

This morning we launch our first furniture collaboration with Artifort at the 2018 Salone del Mobile in Milan. Together we are presenting Moby, a new typology of pouffe, fusing craftsmanship and tradition with insight and functionality.

Known for our consumer technology and homeware, we have always combined our futurist style with strategic user experience. In this collaboration with Artifort, we wanted to explore what a user-centric approach could bring to the traditions and craft of contemporary furniture design.

Tradition + Tech : Furniture for Now

Contemporary furniture design is driven by craft, tradition, heritage and innovation (in both materials and production technique). Often, artistic narrative and visual impact outweigh function and user experience (UX), resulting in beautiful, iconic chairs that are not always comfortable to sit on.

In contrast, new smart technologies promise to improve our lives almost daily. The things we do now whilst sitting on a chair are not the same as those we did just 10 or 20 years ago. … more

On a Nokia Trip

“The Nokia designers have been smoking the wacky-backy again.”

So said a leading tech magazine on the launch of the Nokia 7600, or the 7280, I forget which one. A questionable accolade.

The Next Big Thing

Designing for The Near Future
by Liisa Puolakka, Bronka de Sage, Beatrice Müller

When working in the design and innovation industries, it’s vital that you stop every now and then to take stock of the world around you, to understand the changes that are coming and to consciously project how they may impact your work. When we think about the future in the studio, it’s the following transformative trends and technologies that inspire us…

The problem with salt & pepper…

Spilt peppercorns on the kitchen counter and salt residue on the table. This autumn we wanted to explore an easy-to-fill, mess-free grinder that feels comfortable in hand and enhances the basic user experience. We used our 3D printer to create and assemble a working mill using a modified ceramic Crushgrind mechanism.

Beautiful. Practical. Why can’t your smartphone be both?

No surprises here… the smartphone business is booming.

According to The Independent, demand hit almost 367 million in September, a record for the third quarter of any year to date. And our appetite for the latest must-have model shows no sign of abating. We’re seduced by augmented reality, infinity display screens, wireless charging… but who’s making the smartphone we really need? The beautiful, technically on-point device that can withstand the way we live our lives – the 2am fall from our pockets, the recreational spin with our washing, the grabbing hands of our under-threes.

CNet’s Executive Editor, David Carnoy called out this pervasive flaw in 2015, saying: “The fact is today’s high-end smartphones are incredibly well-designed, sleek electronic devices – except for the fact that they require a companion accessory to safely survive day-to-day living with their human owners. It’s a weird conceit, and one that we’ve all grown to accept.”

Sketching: A Dirty Word

Sketching has always been an integral part of my creative process, but for a while it felt like a dirty word in our industry, something low-brow and indulgent as opposed to the ‘serious business’ of design.

I remember the reaction of an ex-Nokia colleague when I told him I’d spent the whole day sketching; he found it hilarious. What I considered to be several highly productive hours of exploration and form development, he seemed to see as time spent messing around with crayons like a five-year-old at playtime.

Joy Of Living – Revealed!

Now the Joy of Living auction is closed, we can reveal that Tej Chauhan’s piece is Lot 108: “Party!”

Created using just three A4 sheets of Colorplan, the work represents chaos, confusion and loss of cohesion. Yet like life, when considered from a different point of view, new focus can be found bringing clarity and joy. Then it’s time to dance. In the studio, we’ve nicknamed the piece, John. Can you spot why?

Make sure you head over to No 1 Poultry this week to see Joy of Living 2017 – an exhibition of work created by artists and designers in support of Maggie’s Centres.

The exhibition is the culmination of a project conceived by Max Fraser. Over the summer he invited established and emerging pdesigners to create one-off works of art interpreting the title Joy of Living using just three A4 sheets of coloured paper.
